Call to order
10:00 am call to order by Chris Bohling
Address from the Dean regarding staff concerns and questions
- Dean Smith encourages self-care.
- Many of us are working from home and not in our offices. Remember to set a pace for yourself and take time for yourself.
- This is a time for kindness.
- Acknowledge stress around the election. KU leadership is preparing for protests around the election.
- Fall semester enrollment decline is less than anticipated. Provost will send out updates on budget.
- Chancellor’s message mentioned lay-offs and furloughs. Dean Smith has not heard anything about lay-offs or furloughs for library staff. We have had hints about a budget cut for the next fiscal year. Possible 7% budget cut. One of the steps to close that budget gap is to sweep up the money from vacant positions.
- We have 11 people retiring at the end of December. We will have a significant staffing difficulty.
- We have submitted a hiring plan for approval.
- The Provost has formed an advisory group to help inform Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Questions for Dean Smith
- Will a library-wide announcement be made to announce who is retiring in December? Dean Smith said it is up to the individual to notify library staff and faculty.
- Will evaluations be different this year? Dean Smith said no firm decisions have been made. There will not be an alteration to the schedule for evaluations. Make sure we all extend some understanding and forgiveness. Supervisors should be a little extra flexible. Mike Broadwell mentioned we are working on a deadline schedule for evaluations.
