LSA Exec - Minutes - December 1, 2016
LSA Exec
12-1-2016
Present:
Marianne Reed, Leah Hallstrom, Ann Snow, Sharon Riley, Sunita Gandhi, Greta Valentine
Guest:
Brian Moss
Marianne updated the group on designations for Academic Staff vs. Faculty status (MLS degrees required for Faculty, some with advanced degrees may be working as staff)
• The 9 academic staff currently in the Libraries are having their positions converted to tenure track positions.
What does LSA as a staff group want to focus on this coming year?
• Discussed role of at-large representatives, and whether they should have a dedicated portion of KU Libraries staff to act as representative for.
o Group decided not to divide up staff at this point, so that anyone can approach any member of LSA Exec they feel comfortable bringing concerns to.
o Representatives will act as liaison to LSA Exec, and let the LSA body know to contact them about any concerns they’d like to raise at a meeting. There will be options to e mail representatives or submit feedback anonymously via an embedded form if staff prefer. Representatives (and any member of LSA Exec) can pass on staff concerns to the appropriate party, even if it’s something LSA can’t directly address.
• LSA Exec will send out notifications at least 3 days ahead of upcoming LSA Exec meetings
Current and Potential LSA projects
• Participation in updating LFSA website
• Clarifying what issues governance deals with and which they don’t.
o Not individual personnel issues: “Role is not to advocate for individuals but act as a channel to have staff voices heard”
• Highlighting staff career progression options
o Brian: this concern has been raised at university level
• Possibly creating a letter of dissent regarding the concealed carry law/university concealed carry policy? Brian to pass on information about restrictions on lobbying. This is likely an LFSA issue but should be an issue for LSA to actively monitor, express concern about, etc.
• Brian gave update about tuition assistance cuts. Cuts will occur but university senate does not yet know how severe they will be. Brian to monitor this and pass on information to staff. This is a professional development issue, especially for staff without an advanced degree.
