Standing Charges

  • LCPT is the committee required by Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations Article VI. It reviews the qualifications and performance of all members of the library faculty who are to be considered for promotion, award of tenure, non-reappointment, or probationary review, and makes recommendations to the University Committee on Promotion and Tenure, in accordance with the guidelines accepted by the University of Kansas for granting promotions and tenure for library faculty. Its recommendations, together with those of the Dean of Libraries, are forwarded to the Office of the Provost for consideration by the University Committee on Promotion and Tenure.
  • LCPT also acts as the Libraries’ Progress Toward Tenure Review (or equivalent review) Committee. It reviews the qualifications and performance of all members of the library faculty who are scheduled to be evaluated in their progress toward tenure or equivalent review. Once LCPT completes its review, the dossiers for the faculty being reviewed, and the Committee’s recommendations are sent to the Dean of Libraries.
  • LCPT annually reviews the Libraries’ Criteria for Academic Ranks of Library Faculty and the Promotion and Tenure Procedures for the Faculty of The University of Kansas Libraries, in accordance with Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations Article VI and recommends revisions of these criteria to LFA. It also recommends procedures used for the preparation of dossiers for library faculty under review for progress toward tenure and consideration for promotion and/or tenure or equivalent review. LCPT presents its recommendations to LFA for approval.

Standing Charges Progress Summary (please include progress and/or accomplishments related to Standing Charges)

  • Reviewed two promotion to Associate Librarian with tenure files and one promotion to Librarian file in Fall 2023.
  • Reviewed one PTTR file in Spring 2024. Two LCPT members were recused (supervisor and mentor of the candidate). We completed our review with the minimum required three members.
  • LCPT representative met with 8 candidates for faculty positions in FY24.
  • Reviewed and updated where needed, required documentation, templates, tips.
  • LCPT did not review our Criteria and Procedures documentation in terms of recommending any changes. Lars reminded LFA Exec Chair that it was time for LFA to establish a task force for a formal review to draft a revised version for consideration and approval by LFA, and then to campus Standards and Procedures on Promotion and Tenure (SPPT) committee for their review and approval.

Special Charges and Progress Summary:

None given to LCPT

Other actions:

Dean Smith forwarded a request from the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Faculty Senate Standards and Procedures on Promotion and Tenure (SPPT) Committee to complete a campus-wide policy audit to ensure that our P&T policy on file and published in the KU Policy Library is current and has been approved by SPPT. They provided a checklist to indicate which of their criteria was included in our policy. LCPT completed this checklist with some answers provided by Mike Broadwell where HR is involved with the expected action. Dean Smith submitted our response to Faculty Affairs. Lars provided a copy of our response that included “internal only” notes and information to LFA Exec in case it can help the task force who will review our Procedures and Criteria.

Recommendations for LCPT (2023-2024):

  •  None

Potential Charges for Future Committees:

  • None.

Recommendations for LFA Exec

  • LCPT will have to review considerably more promotion and PTTR files in FY26+. The issue is not only the increased number of files but also, we will have a reduced number of librarians who will be able to serve on LCPT due to retirements, and other limiting factors (e.g. supervisors, mentors, administrators, sabbaticals). LFA should explore reducing SLPTR membership total, and/or evaluating the need for full Librarians, and/or other actions to increase the pool of eligible librarians available for LCPT membership effective with FY26.
