CRSA August 8, 2017 (1st meeting)

Present: Jill Becker, Lea Currie, Sharon Riley, Lars Leon (LFA Exec liaison)

Absent: Callie Branstiter, Corinne Forstot-Burke

Notes: Callie out until October 6, Corinne out until September 26.

Agenda:

1 Introductions and quick icebreaker –

 

2. Review of what CRSA did last year (Sharon) – the code calls for some basic actions but then CRSA has liberty to do other things to support the cause. This review will give you a sense of both even as you make your own decisions going forward.

Libraries Research Fund

 

3. Election of Chair, Secretary

Lea, Jill volunteered and confirmed as co-chairs.

Secretary? Jill will check with Callie when she gets back. Sharon will handle as needed before return.

 

4. No special charges at this time. See standing charges below.

 

Actions:

Sharon will send KU Office of Research contact info for GRF to Lea.

Parking lot ideas+

  • Review LRF guidelines - see Libraries Research Fund
  • Research discussion for new faculty (e.g. be aware of funding possibilities).
  • Very important to keep advertising these funds throughout the year.  What these funds can be used for.  Also, the importance of newbies and the NFGRF.    Keep it in people’s minds. 
  • Grant writing workshop
  • IRB approval (example – all research includes student data – need to understand IRB, Social Science methodology) data collections, data analysis – hard, time consuming.
  • Anything that CRMDA can do to help with aspects of research+. (e.g. data analysis) crash course – “here’s all the stuff I have, questions to ask, how get there”.  Also some library staff that might be able to help with this.
  • LFA Exec will be discussing Dean Smith’s comments related to his conversation with Chris Brown on ways in which his office can support faculty development. (Look for more possibly from LFA Exec on this)

3.3.9.1 The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activities in keeping with the Libraries’ mission, shall encourage, promote, and support research and scholarly activities of the members of the Library Faculty and Professionals Assembly.

3.3.9.2 The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activities shall establish and review, on an annual basis, guidelines for the disbursal of funds received from the Dean of Libraries for scholarly pursuits. The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activities shall allocate these funds based on those guidelines. The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activities shall also administer the University’s General Research Funds based on the established criteria.

3.3.9.3 The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activities shall be composed of five members of the Library Faculty and Professionals Assembly, appointed by the Executive Committee, three of whom have

the requirement to engage in research and scholarly activities as part of their professional assignment. A reasonable effort will be made to appoint members who represent the various ranks of faculty as well as

the different units of the Libraries.

3.3.9.4 The appointed members shall serve two-year overlapping terms and shall select a presiding officer and a recording secretary.
