Code Committee Minutes - November 4, 2021
KU Libraries Faculty and Staff Assembly
Committee on the Code
Minutes
Thursday, November 4, 2021
Present:
Erin Wolfe (LFA Exec liaison), Scott Cossel, Jon Giullian, Jamene Brooks-Kieffer
Meeting activities:
- Erin W. ensured all committee members had access to MS Teams site for KU Libraries Governance and directed the committee to the LFSA Webmaster site for depositing minutes and reports.
- The committee selected officers for 2021-2022:
- Scott Cossel: Chair
- Jamene Brooks-Kieffer: Secretary
- Erin W. presented the committee’s special charge from LFSA Exec (text and context below).
- The committee discussed ways to approach the charge. Jon G. noted two examples of inequities relevant to this charge:
- The makeup of the Dean’s 5 year Review delegation from the Libraries (5 faculty, 1 staff)
- Service percentages in the PDs of faculty and largely none for staff, leaving staff service in governance and other committee work invisible in position descriptions and evaluations.
- To move forward on the special charge, committee members will divide the Code into approximate thirds; each committee member will read the entire Code with special attention to their section. In future meetings, we will discuss findings. The Code reading assignments are:
- Scott C. : lines 1-226
- Jamene B-K: lines 227-463
- Jon G.: lines 464-691
- Scott C. will schedule a mid-December meeting to begin discussions.
Special charge for Committee on the Code regarding equity:
Review code for equity-related changes, with particular focus to inequities between faculty and staff processes and procedures (e.g. Committee for Dean's 5-year Review)
Analysis is due to LFSA Exec by March 1st.
Context of the Special Charge from Angie R. (LFA Exec chair, 2021-2022):
“The example of the code’s sections on Dean’s Review for faculty vs staff is the context for this special charge being brought up, but namely that there is a specificity of process for faculty vs lack of for staff, one process of election vs another as appointment, process of opt in vs opt out.
Why these two sections are so different, and the potential inequities those differences present led to the desire to review the code generally for similar differences in treatment between faculty and staff in other process or procedures relevant to both.”
