Library Faculty Assembly Executive Board Meeting Watson Library, 400B Tuesday, December 05, 2017

LFA Members Present: Karna Younger, Chair; Lars Leon, Vice Chair/Chair Elect; Lea Currie, Librarian; Sarah Goodwin Thiel, Associate Librarian; Michael Peper, Assistant Librarian; and Rebecca Orozco, Member at large.

LFA Members Absent: Andi Back, Secretary

  1. Library Faculty Assembly Executive Board (LFA Exec) meeting commenced at 1:05pm.
  2. Minutes approved with corrections via unanimous consent.
  3. Liaison reports
    • Library Committee on Post Tenure Review has completed the post tenure review process, written the report, and sent it to Kevin Smith, Dean of Libraries.
  4. University Senate Libraries Committee
    • Josh Bolick, Scholarly Communications Librarian, talked to the committee about open text books
    • Dean Smith talked to the committee about biannual user survey and tenure forecast. The ten-year forecast was to ask faculty about their library needs for the next ten years
  5. Monthly Dean Meeting
    • Dean Smith would like LFA Executive Committee (LFA Exec) to ask the assembly to remove lines 304-306 of Faculty Evaluation Plan that deal with letters for merit-based raise increases.
      • LFA Exec discussed the removal of the above lines.
    • Library Staff Assembly Executive Board (LSA Exec) approached the KU Libraries cabinet about a staff professional development day. Kevin awarded LSA Exec $500 to support the professional development day initiative.
  6. Faculty Evaluation Plan
    • LFA Exec will bring the proposal presented by Dean Smith before the general assembly in the LFA Spring general assembly meeting.
  7. Appointment of Associate Librarian
    • LFA Exec discussed nominations of LFA members to replace Sarah Goodwin Thiel for the spring semester.
    • Karna Younger, Chair of LFA Executive Board, will email nominees to ask them to serve in the Associate Librarian position for the spring semester.
  8. Research Forum Recap
    • The Committee on Research and Scholarly Activity (CRSA) held a fall semester research forum. A question about two years being enough time for new library faculty to apply for the New Faculty General Research Fund (NFGRF) was raised.
    • LFA Exec discussed that it may be better to build internal support for new faculty to apply for the NFGRF within two years. LFA Exec discussed incorporating it into the onboarding process for new faculty hires and emphasizing it as part of the P&T mentoring.
  9. New Hire Governance Lunch
    • Dean Smith has approved funding for new Library Faculty and Staff Assembly members to promote involvement in library governance. The Library Faculty and Staff Assembly Executive Board will begin planning the lunch in January 2018.
